Date with our Mate #2 - Topless Road Trip
If you've read our May 1 post, you know we've decided to give Date Your Mate Month a spin. Now that the kids are almost out of the house, I don't want to find myself staring at my husband over the dinner table with nothing to talk about except the kids.
So to chart this new phase in our relationship my husband and I start with what else? Google Maps.
One of our favorite day trips is to drive from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara without ever getting on a freeway. (Check the avoid highways box when you map it.)
It takes almost twice as long, but the side roads are quiet, the scenery is picturesque and the time alone together in the car is better than therapy.
And my husband's beloved 1970 VW Bug plays Cupid. First of all, it's small so we sit close. There's no Bluetooth, only an old radio and a retro CD player. We crank up Bryan Adams Unplugged and sing! Suddenly it's 1984 again.
When we finally get to Santa Barbara we'll be just in time for afternoon cocktails on the gorgeous deck at the historic El Encanto resort.
Then it's off to join the line out the door at La Super-Rica Tacqueria - Julia Child's ordained favorite Mexican place to eat and #90 of the 101 Best Casual Restaurants in America for 2017.
After we've filled up on the juicy tri-tip tacos and handmade corn tortillas, we bundle up in parkas and with the wind blowing through our hair we drive home holding hands, except when it's time to use the stick shift.
